WASHINGTON, D.C. – This afternoon, the U.S. House of Representatives voted against passage of H.R. 1947, known as the Farm Bill. Congressman Marc Veasey provided the following remarks following the defeat of the legislation:
WASHINGTON, D.C. – On the heels of the Congressional Budget Office (CBO) score of the Senate’s bipartisan immigration reform bill, Congressman Veasey is confident that the comprehensive immigration reform will boost the economy in the 33rd Congressional District.
Democratic members of Congress took part in theCongressional SNAP challenge, living on the $4.50 per day allotted to Americans who receive SNAP, or food stamps. Two freshman members of the Texas delegation -- Beto O'Rourke (TX-16, El Paso) and Marc Veasey (TX-33, Dallas-Fort Worth) -- participated in the challenge.
Should Congress cut SNAP benefits in the Farm Bill to give huge breaks to agri-business and corporate farms, Texans will be particularly hard hit. According to the Texas Food Bank Network, 171,000 Texans would be kicked off SNAP immediately.

Today, Congressman Marc Veasey (TX-33) announced the awarding of a $16,000 grant to the Irving Public Library through the Big Read initiative. The Big Read, by the National Endowment of the Arts (NEA), is an initiative designed to boost reading programs across the nation.

Congressman Marc Veasey announced that the nation would mark the 50th anniversary of President John F. Kennedy signing the Equal Pay Act into law on June 10.
“When President Kennedy signed the Equal Pay Act of 1963 into law, it meant that women would enter the labor force and find equality in their pay envelopes,’” Congressman Veasey stated. “However, 50 years after its enactment, we still find our nation plagued with wage disparities.”
The House farm bill, which aimed to cut $20 billion from the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP), or food-stamp program, has prompted Republican staffer Donny Ferguson to experiment with and prove firsthand that the proposed budget cuts are not only reasonable but actually quite generous. However, while this may be good policy today, it could very well lead to more harm than good in the long run.
