EDINBURG, Texas (NNS) -- "The STEM Revolution" is the theme of the 2014 Hispanic Engineering, Science, and Technology (HESTEC) Week held on the campus of the University of Texas-Pan American (UTPA), Oct. 6-12.
HESTEC Week is an educational conference that features events geared toward promoting science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM) education to people of all ages and backgrounds.
The week began with a congressional panel of 10 distinguished speakers focused on increases in STEM-related degrees and employment.
Earlier this month a severe storm pounded North Texas, leaving Allen resident David Dobrenic wishing he had a storm shelter in his house.
"Just a safety factor, you can't put a price on a life," said Dobrenic.
Last summer Dobrenic signed his family up for the North Central Texas Safe Room Rebate Program, which helps pay for storm shelters.
From the moment it launched, there's been an overwhelming amount of interest.
Molly Thoerner, with the North Central Texas Council of Governments, manages the program. She said they had no idea there would be so much demand.

This competition is a nationwide event that showcases all participating congressional districts' high school students' ingenuity in creating a software application, or "app," for mobile, tablet, or computer devices on a platform of their choice.

This month, Congressman Marc Veasey, TX-33, will visit Congressional District 33-area High Schools to talk to students about the first annual Congressional STEM Competition.

WASHINGTON, D.C. — Congressman Marc Veasey, TX-33, invites local high school students in the Metroplex to participate in the first annual congressional science, technology, engineering and math (STEM) academic competition, the House Student App Challenge. This competition is a nationwide event that showcases all participating congressional districts high school student's ingenuity in creating a software application, or "app," for mobile, tablet, or computer devices on a platform of their choice.
U.S. Rep. Marc Veasey, D-Fort Worth, has introduced his first two bills in Congress -- one to help veterans and one to encourage healthy lifestyles. One bill, H.R. 1816, gives more assistance under the post-9/11 GI Bill to veterans seeking degrees in science, technology, engineering and math (STEM). The other, H.R. 195, designates May as "Health and Fitness Month," and encourages Americans to lead healthy lifestyles.
Veasey was sworn into office in January.
