WASHINGTON — Texas Democrats in Congress slammed proposed state rules requiring extra training for Obamacare navigators Wednesday, and they've asked Attorney General Eric Holder to intervene.
Navigators help consumers sign up for health insurance through online exchanges set up under the Affordable Care Act.
Federal rules require navigators to have 20 to 30 hours of training. Rules proposed by the Texas Department of Insurance would add 40 more hours, require criminal background checks, and charge a fee of up to $800 for certification.
Washington, D.C. – Congressman Marc Veasey, TX-33, joined fellow members of the Texas House Democratic Congressional Delegation in a letter to Attorney General Eric Holder requesting the Department of Justice to initiate legal proceedings to stop the Texas Department of Insurance (TDI) from imposing arbitrary and discriminatory restrictions on "Navigators" for health insurance exchanges. Texas is one of nine states whose laws limit how health care navigators can help constituents buy insurance and learn if they are eligible for federal assistance to pay for it.

Just a month into the Marketplace enrollment, the call provided an indication of how 265,000 uninsured residents in Texas' 33rd congressional district have been educated and assisted with the healthcare marketplace.

He stood with Dallas Mayor Mike Rawlings, Dallas County Judge Clay Jenkins, U.S. Rep. Eddie Bernice Johnson, D-Dallas, and others to greet the president.
