Dozens of local eighth-graders won’t have to learn about the ongoing government shutdown from the pages of a history book.

About 80 Trinity Valley students are in Washington, D.C. right now, learning about the shutdown — and how it’s affecting them and others — up close, in person, during a week-long trip.

National parks are closed. Access to many federal buildings and monuments is shut off. Doors to Smithsonian museums are closed and locked.

US Congressman Marc Veasey (TX-33) announced that he is cosponsoring a comprehensive immigration reform bill, the Border Security, Economic Opportunity, and Immigration Modernization Act, introduced in the House, by Rep. Joe Garcia (D-FL) and other House Democrats.

This bill is designed to receive bipartisan support in the House. It contains the provisions of the commonsense, comprehensive immigration reform bill that passed the Senate in June by the bipartisan vote of 68 to 32.

This week, LULAC members from across the country took part in LULAC’s ACTober: Fall Advocacy Days. The nation’s oldest and largest Latino organization conducted advocacy visits with Congressional offices and addressed issues such as education, health care, and immigration reform.

Congressman Marc Veasey and state Senator Leticia Van De Putte held a press conference Wednesday afternoon addressing the filibuster by Ted Cruz that could lead to a potential government shutdown and hurt Texas families. Both officials chided Cruz and the extreme wing of the Republican party who are holding the government hostage over their objections to funding the Affordable Care Act.

Cmdr. Warren Cupps wears his Fort Worth cowboy boots and a Stetson hat on the bridge of "the best ship on the water.” "There's no doubt in my mind that the USS Fort Worth will be successful, because the sailors manning LCS ships are the best the Navy has got," Cupps said….

Congressman Marc Veasey, D-Fort Worth, said the LCS is an important program, because it represents the Navy's shift to a combat ship that can perform high-tech missions and be operated by smaller crews.

Bell Helicopter Textron is cutting 290 jobs from its Fort Worth workforce. The layoffs are effective immediately and include hourly, salaried and management employees. Also being cut are about 85 Bell contractors…

Rep. Marc Veasey, D-Fort Worth, used the layoffs to voice his disapproval of sequestration in a statement issued by his office…

Despite a dress code controversy last week that seemed to overshadow the 30th anniversary of Dallas Pride, larger crowds turned out for festivities without any apparel-related incidents reported.

Rep. Marc Veasey walked with Stonewall Democrats of Dallas, the first time a congressman participated in the parade in recent memory. State Reps. Roberto Alonzo and Rafael Anchia, as well as a number of judges and candidates also marched with Stonewall.

The House on Wednesday passed legislation designed to speed up the federal approval process for mineral mining and exploration, which they said is necessary to ensure the U.S. has domestic sources of strategic minerals.

Democrats said they opposed the bill because it would erode environmental protections, and because the bill includes a very broad definition of "strategic mineral."

Pro-merger airline workers: Hundreds of flight attendants, pilots, airport gate workers, mechanics and other employees of American Airlines and US Airways are set to flood the Hill today. The groups have more than 350 meetings with members’ offices to ask them to press DOJ to drop its suit against a proposed merger between the two airlines.
