The NAACP Irving-Carrollton Chapter held its annual Freedom Fund luncheon Saturday at the Sheraton DFW Airport in Irving. The keynote speaker was Rep. Marc Veasey. Veasey talked about his efforts in helping change Voter ID legislation and the importance of voting. (Veasey returned to Irving Monday for a meet-and-greet at Glory House in the Heritage District.)

Rep. Marc Veasey will deliver the keynote address at the Irving-Carrollton Branch NAACP’s annual Freedom Fund Luncheon on Saturday.

A special guest will be David Williams, the 12-year-old boy from Oak Cliff recently profiled in the Dallas Morning News because of his interest in politics. David often attends Dallas City Council meetings and has met with Dallas Mayor Mike Rawlings.

US Congressman Marc Veasey (TX-33) announced that he is cosponsoring a comprehensive immigration reform bill, the Border Security, Economic Opportunity, and Immigration Modernization Act, introduced in the House, by Rep. Joe Garcia (D-FL) and other House Democrats.

This bill is designed to receive bipartisan support in the House. It contains the provisions of the commonsense, comprehensive immigration reform bill that passed the Senate in June by the bipartisan vote of 68 to 32.

This week, LULAC members from across the country took part in LULAC’s ACTober: Fall Advocacy Days. The nation’s oldest and largest Latino organization conducted advocacy visits with Congressional offices and addressed issues such as education, health care, and immigration reform.

DALLAS, TX –Texas Organizing Project (TOP), and North Texas Immigration Coalition (NTIC) will host an immigration reform town hall meeting with special guest Congressman Marc Veasey (TX-33) this Saturday, Aug. 31 from 11:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. at Grace Fellowship in Christ Jesus Church, located at 411 S. Westmoreland Rd. in Oak Cliff. The town hall is free and open to the public.

The alarming frequency of gun violence in Chicago has made the city the face of what is in fact a disturbing national trend. Just last night, four people were shot. During the Fourth of July holiday weekend, for the second consecutive year, 16 people were killed and an additional 70 received gunshot wounds. Since the start of the year, 188 murders have occurred.

Texas Rep. Marc Veasey noted that, recently, Ft. Worth has begun to experience a rash of violence. He shared three stories that ended in tragedy at the hands of people who clearly were dealing with mental health issues.

WASHINGTON — President Barack Obama pledged to black lawmakers Tuesday that he will help rebuild the Voting Rights Act after a Supreme Court ruling gutted federal oversight of states with a history of bias.

“He’s with us, and he wants to make sure we do something to strengthen voting rights for all Americans,” Rep. Marc Veasey, D-Fort Worth, said at the White House after Obama met with members of the Congressional Black Caucus.

Black lawmakers said they also discussed how to develop a new formula for deciding which states deserve extra scrutiny.
