Rep. Veasey Statement on Texas Voter ID Ruling
WASHINGTON, D.C. – Congressman Marc Veasey, TX-33, released the following statement after the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Fifth Circuit struck down Texas' voter ID law:
"Today, on the heels of the 50th Anniversary of the Voting Rights Act, I'm very pleased that the U.S. Court of Appeals for the 5th Circuit upheld the lower court's decision that the TX Voter ID law has a discriminatory effect on minority voters and violates the Voting Rights Act. As the lead plaintiff in Veasey v.Abbott, I challenged the state of Texas, asserting that the new voter photo ID requirements are discriminatory at the expense of minority participation. As a champion for voting rights, I am proud that with this decision, the U.S. Court of Appeals for the 5th Circuit has taken the first steps towards ensuring that all Texans have unfettered access to the ballot box. I am confident that on remand, the district court will once again find that this law was discriminatory in intent, as well as effect, and will invalidate the statute's Voter Photo I.D. requirements. Now it's time for Governor Abbott and Attorney General Paxton to end the hostility against Texas voters."
