Rep. Veasey Statement on Federal Court Ruling Against Texas Voter Photo ID Law

October 10, 2014

Congressman Marc Veasey, TX-33, released the following statement in response to federal court ruling against Texas Voter Photo Identification Law:

"Judge Ramos' ruling is very clear; the discriminatory Texas Voter Photo ID law has been overturned and is currently unenforceable. While we don't know for sure how Attorney General Greg Abbott's appeal will affect this ruling, we do know that an appeals court has never overturned a finding by a lower court of intentional discrimination.

"It is appalling that Greg Abbott is requesting that the 5th Circuit break precedent and uphold a law that was drafted to intentionally discriminate against minority voters. Furthermore, I find Abbott's decision to appeal completely shameful and self-serving. Abbott should do what's best for all Texans instead of pushing his discriminatory political agenda that would disenfranchise eligible voters.

"Texas leaders should be focusing on creating jobs instead of throwing money away on partisan politics.

I refuse to turn back the clock on voting rights protections. The right to vote is sacred and must be protected at all costs."
