Rep. Veasey and Texas Colleagues Urge Attorney General to Protect the Right to Vote for Texans

May 27, 2021

Today’s Letter Comes in Response to Texas State Legislature Advancing Dangerous Jim Crow-Style Voter Suppression Laws

WASHINGTON, DC – Today, Congressman Marc Veasey (TX-33) and eight of his colleagues in the Texas Congressional Delegation sent a letter to Attorney General Merrick Garland urging him to safeguard the right to vote as the Texas State Legislature moves closer to passing restrictive voter suppression laws that will make it harder to vote for all Texans across the state, especially communities of color.

"During the 2020 election, we saw millions of Texans across our state risk their lives to vote amid a deadly pandemic to ensure their voices were heard at the ballot box," said Congressman Marc Veasey (TX-33). "It is clear that Texas Republicans are fearful of this momentum and the growing voting strength of communities of color across our state, which is why they are fighting tooth and nail to pass these dangerous voter suppression measures. Neither I nor any responsible Texan can stand for this. As a Black man representing one of the most diverse districts in Congress and as the co-founder of the Congressional Voting Rights Caucus, I will continue to fight to ensure all Texans in our state can safely and effectively vote. These harmful laws in Texas underscore why the U.S. Congress must use every tool they can to swiftly pass the For the People Act and the John Lewis Voting Rights Restoration Act—because the future of our democracy and our access to the ballot box is in jeopardy."

Joining Representative Veasey (TX-33) were Representatives Colin Allred (TX-32), Eddie Bernice Johnson (TX-30), Sheila Jackson Lee (TX-18), Al Green (TX-09), Joaquin Castro (TX-20), Sylvia R. Garcia (TX-29), Veronica Escobar (TX-16) and Lizzie Fletcher (TX-07).
