Congressman Veasey Statement On SCOTUS Striking Down North Carolina’s Gerrymandered Maps

May 22, 2017

Washington, D.C. – Congressman Marc Veasey, TX-33, Co-Chair of the Congressional Voting Rights Caucus, released the following statement after the U.S. Supreme Court ruled that North Carolina had engaged in unconstitutional gerrymandering:

"Today's Supreme Court decision makes it clear that Republicans in North Carolina, just like in my home state of Texas, engaged in an intentionally discriminatory redistricting process that systematically packed and cracked minority neighborhoods in violation of the law. I am happy that North Carolina voters secured another victory against the national Republican crusade to undermine the voting power of African Americans and Hispanics in local, state, and federal elections. The Supreme Court's decision amplifies the purpose and renews the call for the Congressional Voting Rights Caucus to make sure all Americans can freely and fairly participate in elections."
