Congressman Veasey Statement on North Carolina Voter ID Ruling

May 15, 2017

Washington, D.C. – Congressman Marc Veasey, Co-Chairman of the Congressional Voting Rights Caucus, issued the following statement after the Supreme Court of the United States rejected North Carolina's appeal to reinstate its discriminatory and suppressive voting tactics:

"Today was yet another victory in the battle to restore access to the ballot box. Justice was on the side of North Carolina's disenfranchised voters that have had to sadly resort to the courts to protect their right to vote. As the lead plaintiff of Veasey v. Abbott, I've been on the frontline of fighting this same type of discrimination in my home state. Much like Texas Republicans, North Carolina's Republican leadership would rather try to keep minorities from the voting booth than respect their growing voting influence. This is especially troubling given the appeals court's ruling that found North Carolina Republicans targeted ‘African American voters almost with surgical precision.' As courts continue to rule on laws created to suppress voters, a pattern of targeted discrimination emerges. It is more urgent than ever that Texas Republicans heed the advice of the North Carolina Supreme Court decision and forego any contemplated court actions that waste taxpayer money in the Texas voter ID case."
