Press Release

Washington, D.C. – On the heels of the 2016 presidential election, ensuring unfettered access to the ballot box for all Americans is more important than ever. For this reason, Congressman Marc Veasey, TX-33, co-chair of the Congressional Voting Rights Caucus (CVRC) introduced H.Res. 866, a resolution to commemorate the month of September as “National Voting Rights Month,” to highlight the importance of this sacred right. Notably, the resolution encourages our nation’s public schools and universities to develop an academic curriculum on the importance of voting and encourages every American to exercise their sacred and fundamental right to vote.

“The fight to restore access to the ballot box is not over in Congress,” said Congressman Veasey. “We must update the original Voting Rights Act, a task that was left to Congress to fix after the Shelby v. Holder decision three years ago, in order to ensure that all Americans can fully participate in our nation’s democracy.”

The resolution text can be found here.

During the month of September, Congressman Veasey will participate in voting rights events. For more information on the Congressional Voting Rights Caucus (CVRC) and voting rights events in September, please visit:
