Congressman Marc Veasey (TX-33): “Texas Court’s Decision To Not Supervise Redistricting Will Suppress Voters of Color”

July 24, 2019

WASHINGTON, D.C. – Today, Congressman Marc Veasey (TX-33) released the following statement after a panel of federal judges ruled to deny the requests of voters of color, civil rights groups and Democratic lawmakers to put Texas back under federal supervision of its redistricting:

"Today's decision by a federal court further reinforces that Texas Republican leaders intentionally discriminate to undermine the voting rights and voting strength of Texans of color. The Court's ruling details how Republican leaders use intentionally discriminatory tactics to gerrymander districts and rig our voting laws. I'm frustrated that the Court stopped short of requiring that newly enacted redistricting plans and voting laws be reviewed and approved before being allowed to take effect. I fully expect that GOP state leaders will continue their assault on the protections within the Voting Rights Act and our Constitution, and I fully intend to fight back to protect those cherished rights."
