Congressman Marc Veasey (TX-33) Introduces Legislation That Will Increase Transparency and Hold Law Enforcement Accountable
WASHINGTON, D.C. - On the heels of the fatal police shooting of Texas native Atatiana Jefferson, Congressman Marc Veasey (TX-33) introduced two pieces of legislation that will hold law enforcement accountable and boost transparency in the investigations of law enforcement.
Congressman Veasey’s introduced the Police Protection Act of 2019, that ensures police departments across the country provide thorough, accurate, and professional investigations in cases involving the injury or death of a person. The legislation discourages police officers to corroborate a false or inaccurate report and ensures that police officers submit reports within 24 hours when an individual is injured or killed by a police officer or while in police custody.
In addition, Veasey introduced the Preservation of Public Evidence Act of 2019, to provide access to all gathered evidence when investigating a crime. Evidence including footage from body cameras, dashboard cameras, photographs, videos, and witness statements would be accessible to provide transparency when complying with the fundamental mission of the police: to protect and serve.
“Atatiana Jefferson is the latest victim of rogue policing that has taken numerous lives of black and brown people across our country,” said Congressman Veasey (TX-33). “This legislation will work to reform unjust policing practices and restore confidence in those that are tasked with protecting our communities by ensuring that law enforcement departments provide a thorough and transparent investigation when a crime is committed.”
