Veasey Statement on Supreme Court Nomination of Judge Merrick Garland

March 16, 2016

Washington, D.C. - Congressman Marc Veasey, TX-33, released the following statement after President Obama announced his nomination of Judge Merrick Garland, Chief Judge of the U.S. Court of Appeals for the D.C. Court, for the U.S. Supreme Court vacancy:

“President Obama has recommended an extraordinarily qualified and unbiased legal scholar to the highest court in the land. Judge Merrick Garland has more federal judicial experience than any other Supreme Court nominee in history; clearly the President has exercised good judgement and will. Now, we turn our attention to Senate Republicans’ responsibility to fairly consider the President’s nomination. This is a test of whether politics will prevail or if the best interest of the public will triumph. There is no reasonable defense for Republican Senate leadership to refuse Judge Merrick Garland the benefit of a full hearing and just consideration.”
