Rep.Veasey on the Investigation of Child Neglect in Dilley ICE Detention Center

August 10, 2018

Following the opening of an investigation by Texas state officials into the possible neglect of a minor who died upon leaving an Immigration and Customs Enforcement facility in Dilley, Rep.Marc Veasey issued the statement below:

"In early July, I visited Karnes Country ICE Detention facility and Casa Padre, a children's detention center in Brownsville, Texas. In both facilities, I received a guided tour. While I didn't notice anything unsanitary, it is clear to me that they only showed what they wanted me to see. I was discouraged from talking or asking questions to anyone held in custody," said Congressman Veasey.
"The lack of transparency is alarming. Members of Congress should have unfettered access to these facilities and the ability to ask questions to those detained about the conditions in which they are being held. We must hold these facilities accountable and ensure they are following the laws that govern them."
