Reps. Veasey, Allred Introduce Resolution to Commemorate May as National Physical Fitness and Sports Month
WASHINGTON – Representative Marc Veasey (TX-33), Co-chair of the Youth Sports Caucus, and Representative Colin Allred (TX-32) introduced a resolution recognizing May 2024 as National Physical Fitness and Sports Month to encourage Americans of all ages to engage in physical activity and promote a healthier lifestyle.
“As Co-Chair of the Youth Sports Caucus, I know first-hand the key role physical fitness and exercise play in promoting good health and wellbeing in people of all ages,” said Rep. Veasey. “Everyone should have the resources they need to play sports and get exercise, no matter their background or socioeconomic status. At a time when too few Americans get the physical activity they need, I am committed to empowering all Americans to prioritize healthy habits through the commemoration of Physical Fitness and Sports Month.”
“As a former professional and student athlete, I know how rewarding it is to be part of a team and the opportunities it can bring for our young people,” said Rep. Allred. “Prioritizing daily physical activity improves mental and physical health while developing critical leadership skills. That’s why I’m proud to join Congressman Veasey in leading a Resolution that designates May 2024 as National Physical Fitness and Sports Month, and I will continue working to increase access to sports opportunities and healthy living.”
Studies show that in adults, just 150 minutes a week of physical activity improves sleep quality, reduces anxiety, and reduces the risk of developing chronic diseases, including dementia, certain cancers, and type 2 diabetes. In children, physical activity and sports are critical to development and well-being, with 60 minutes a day of play improving kids' attention and memory, reducing the risk of depression, and helping to regulate body weight.
The bipartisan resolution is also co-sponsored by Reps. Sewell (AL-07), Holmes-Norton (DC-AL), Barragan (CA-44) and Bacon (NE-02).
