Rep. Veasey's Statement on the Verdict for the Killing of Jordan Edwards

August 29, 2018

"First, as a father, I feel strongly that the verdict reached yesterday in the killing of Jordan Edwards was just. I have a great deal of respect for law enforcement. But, for far too long, unjustified killings and shootings of black men and boys have been taken lightly and not given fair due process in our criminal justice system.

I hope moving forward that local law enforcement will work closely with communities they serve, be transparent in all aspects of their duties, and work diligently to remove bias from their ranks be it intentional or institutional; so that future encounters won't end tragically as in this case. I'm keeping the Edwards family in my prayers in the coming days and months; as I'm sure they will be seeking closure over the loss of their son now that this trial has reached its conclusion."
