January 12, 2023 Press ReleaseWASHINGTON, DC – After being officially sworn in for a sixth term in the 118th Congress last Saturday, Rep. Veasey spent this week voting against House Republicans' extreme MAGA agenda. The legislation House Republicans brought to the floor included:Multiple bills attacking women's reproductive freedoms. Their legislation is a march towards criminalizing abortion with no exceptions and denying women life-saving care nationwide.A bill that prioritizes tax cheats over American needs. Their very first bill on the floor in the new Congress helps tax cheats avoid paying their fair share, rewarding their wealthy and well-connected backers while adding $114 billion to the debt.A rules package that appeases the far-right wing of the Republican Caucus. Their package will hand tax breaks to the wealthy and well-connected, gut the Office of Congressional Ethics–a critical tool for restoring the confidence of the American people in Congress and will put our nation's credit rating at risk by threatening not to address the debt ceiling."House Republicans did nothing in their first week in power to help people across America and address the pressing problems that we face. Instead, they prioritized criminalizing abortion, helping tax cheats, appeasing the far-right wing of their party, and political stunts," said Rep. Veasey. "And look, I will extend the hand of bipartisan partnership on issues where we can work together for the American people–like voting yes for the Select Committee on the Strategic Competition Between the United States and the Chinese Communist Party. However, the rest of these bills are completely out of touch with the needs of the American people, which is why I voted against them." You can watch Rep. Veasey's video discussing House Republicans' extreme MAGA agenda here.
