Rep. Veasey (TX-33) Votes to Protect the Right to Vote for All Americans, Honor the Legacy of John Lewis

August 24, 2021

Today, Rep. Marc Veasey (TX-33) issued the following statement after he voted to protect the sacred right to vote with the passage of the John R. Lewis Voting Rights Advancement Act (H.R. 4).

"I am proud to join my colleagues in the U.S. House of Representatives to pass the John R. Lewis Voting Rights Advancement Act (H.R. 4) to finally restore the vote and help put the guardrails back on our democracy.

"As a Democrat in Texas representing a minority opportunity district, I have consistently seen Texas Republicans overtly discriminate against Black and Latino voters for decades and now, they are continuing their rampage by ramming through dangerous and discriminatory anti-voter legislation.

"That is why today's passage of the John Lewis Voting Rights Advancement Act is critical. As states like Texas continue to pursue restrictive, anti-voter bills, the need to restore federal oversight has never been more urgent. The John Lewis Voting Rights Advancement Act will get us back on the right track by restoring the full protections of the Voting Rights Act of 1965 and reimplement the critically needed VRA pre-clearance provision to focus on states with a recent history of discrimination.

"I am so proud to finally pass this legislation. I urge the Senate to quickly follow our path and use every tool they can to pass this bill immediately because what we do at this moment will determine the course of our democracy for decades to come."
