Rep. Veasey (TX-33) Opposes House Passage of FY25 NDAA

June 14, 2024

Representative Marc Veasey, member of the House Armed Services Committee, issued the following statement after voting against the House passage of H.R. 8070, the National Defense Authorization Act (NDAA) for Fiscal Year 2025 (FY25):

"During my tenure in Congress, I have consistently supported the National Defense Authorization Act, reflecting my steadfast commitment to our nation's security. The district that I represent in Congress plays a crucial role in our defense industry, and I have always recognized the NDAA's significance in strengthening our national defense, supporting our dedicated service members and their families, and supporting the hardworking Texans who are integral to our defense efforts.

My House Armed Services Democratic colleagues and I worked collaboratively across the aisle with our Republican counterparts to create and pass a bipartisan defense bill out of committee. The bill focused on investing in improving the quality of life for our service members, not only aimed to enhance America's national defense but also to bring tangible benefits to North Texas.

For the second year in a row, the bill that emerged from the committee has been drastically altered with far-right amendments on the house floor. The adopted amendments aim to attack crucial diversity, equity, and inclusion programs, reproductive health care, women, LGBTQ+ individuals, and people of color serving in the defense department. The inclusion of divisive and extreme amendments undermines the sacrifices of our service members and infringes on their freedoms. The NDAA passed today does not meet the standards our service members and our nation deserve, which is why I voted against it.

My commitment to our national security and the welfare of our service members remains unwavering. I will continue to work with my colleagues in the House and the Senate to finalize a bill that truly strengthens America's national security, honors the bravery of our service members, and delivers meaningful benefits for the people of North Texas."
