Rep. Veasey (TX-33) On Republican Police Brutality Reform Proposals: “Now Is The Time For Real Reform, Not More False Promises”

June 17, 2020

WASHINGTON, D.C. — Congressman Marc Veasey (TX-33) released the following statement after the Judiciary Committee's passage of the Justice in Policing Act—police brutality reform legislation that goes much farther to transform the culture of police brutality than the recent Republican proposals:

"Our country is in a watershed moment that calls for real reform, not more false promises. As a country and a Congress, we must internalize this moment of national anguish and use it as fuel to put an end to the systemic issues in police departments and racism that have plagued our society. Last week, House and Senate Democrats took the first step in doing so by unveiling the Justice in Policing Act—bold, unprecedented reforms to curb police brutality, end racial profiling and eliminate qualified immunity for law enforcement—that will now be going to the floor for a full vote by the House.

Sadly, in contrast, President Trump's Executive Order and the Senate Republicans' police proposals that have been put forth fail to incite the meaningful change that is required to combat the epidemic of racial injustice and police brutality in America. That is why I am proud to be an original cosponsor of the Justice in Policing Act and will vote to pass it later this month, because I can't continue to have my son grow up in a world where we fear for his life just because of the color of skin."
