May 24, 2024

Legislation Establishes Military Priorities for Next Year, Delivering Wins for North Texas

WASHINGTON – Congressman Marc Veasey (TX-33) and his colleagues on the House Armed Services Committee successfully moved H.R. 8070, the Servicemember Quality of Life Investment Act and National Defense Authorization Act for Fiscal Year 2025, out of committee this week. This year’s NDAA prioritizes and invests significantly in improving the quality of life for service members. Key areas of focus include enhancing compensation, child care, health care, housing and spousal employment. In addition, the bill supports foreign relations, increases oversight of the Department of Defense, and creates job opportunities in North Texas. Congressman Veasey played a crucial role in crafting and advocating for these important provisions.

“The bipartisan FY25 NDAA strengthens our national defense and aids our global allies and partners,” said Congressman Veasey. “While I may not agree with every provision in this bill, I was proud to join my colleagues in the Armed Services Committee to pass this critical bill out of our committee. It delivers substantial benefits for our military, enhances national security, and delivers crucial wins for North Texas”.

Thanks to the leadership of Congressman Veasey and his colleagues, the bipartisan FY25 NDAA secures several wins for North Texas, reaffirming Veasey's commitment to his constituents. Among the provisions are:

  • Funding for V-22s and CH-53K: The legislation allocates funding to support the procurement, modernization, and sustainment of critical military aircraft. This investment strengthens national defense capabilities and creates numerous job opportunities within the DFW Metroplex.
  • Support for Ukraine and allies: This legislation authorizes $3.9 billion in NATO support for countering Russian aggression programs in Ukraine, making clear to all that the United States maintains its commitments and promises to friends and allies.
  • Improve quality of life for service members and families: This legislation authorizes a 19.5 percent pay raise for junior enlisted service members and a 4.5 percent pay raise for all other service members. It also authorizes $50 million for local educational agencies with military-dependent students and $20 million for local educational agencies eligible to receive payment for children with severe disabilities.
  • Address negative biases in the military: Rep. Veasey introduced an amendment that would create a pilot program allowing all Air Force and Space Force members to have beards. This pilot program would study the effects of having beards on safety, discipline, morale, and inclusivity.
  • HBCU funding: This legislation authorizes $125 million for Historically Black Colleges and Universities and Minority Serving Institutions, an increase of $25 million over the budget request.

This comprehensive legislation underscores our nation's dedication to maintaining a robust defense posture while supporting the well-being of those who serve. Congressman Veasey remains committed to advocating for policies that protect our country and honor the sacrifices of our military personnel and their families.
