Rep. Veasey Statement on Passage of the House Republican Continuing Resolution
WASHINGTON, D.C. -- Rep. Marc Veasey (TX-33) released the following statement today after the House voted 230 to 189 to pass the Republican Continuing Resolution:
“We are faced with the threat of a government shutdown at the end of this month as well as the need to raise the debt ceiling; which would simply allow America to pay its bills. Yet, instead of working together toward a bipartisan compromise, today, we saw Republican leadership continue to play political games by attempting, for the forty second time, to repeal the Affordable Care Act. This latest action by the House Majority will undoubtedly be rejected by the Senate and the White House. Even if it were to pass into law, it would only keep the government running for another three months, and would continue the Sequester’s misguided, indiscriminate cuts to government spending. Business sectors would be hit hard and the costs to American families of a government default will be significant.”
“There is no question that shutting down the government or defaulting on our debt would be disastrous to our economy. The uncertainty that these actions are placing on Americans hampers true economic growth. House Republican leadership should not hold our economy hostage for extremist political games. We must do everything we can to keep the U.S. economy on the course to recovery. It’s time for this Republican Congress to get to work on real jobs legislation, not sabotage Americans’ healthcare and risk another downgrade to our nation’s credit rating and financial markets. Today’s continuing resolution passed on a party line vote of 230-189 and I was proud to vote No.”
