Rep. Veasey Statement on House Republicans Attack on Women’s Health
Veasey Votes Against H.R. 36, Pain-Capable Unborn Child Protection Act
Washington, D.C. –Congressman Marc Veasey, TX-33, released the following statement after voting against the partisan H.R. 36, Pain-Capable Unborn Child Protection Act:
"Today, I was proud to vote against the highly partisan H.R. 36, Pain-Capable Unborn Child Protection Act, that passed the House earlier today. This legislation is an affront to women's reproductive healthcare rights and I'm disappointed that the House of Representatives is choosing to consider legislation that limits women's healthcare when we should be focusing on bills that create jobs and strengthen our economy.
Women's healthcare decisions should be just that, their decisions, made in consultation with her doctor and family, not mandated by politicians in Washington D.C. I object to not only the scientifically disputed time restriction of twenty weeks that ignores medical necessities, but also to overly burdensome reporting requirements for victims of sexual assault and the absence of exemptions for the health of the mother.
I join with numerous organizations dedicated to women's health like American Nurses Association, National Women's Health Network, NARAL Pro-Choice America, Planned Parenthood Federation of America, and the National Organization of Women in opposing this bill."
