Rep. Veasey Statement in Recognition of Martin Luther King Jr. Day
WASHINGTON, D.C. – Congressman Marc Veasey, TX-33, released the following statement in recognition of Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. and the National Day of Service on Monday, January 20, 2014:
"Today, we honor the memory of Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King Jr., one of America's greatest leaders, who dedicated his life to ensure civil liberties for all Americans. His courage led us to strive to be a nation that provides social and economic justice for all, yet, we are still faced with many of the same obstacles he faced. From limited access to the voting booth to equal pay for equal work, and even immigration reform, there is still much to accomplish. He was once quoted as saying, ‘Life's most persistent and urgent question is ‘What are you doing for others?' This drove Dr. King during his life, and it is this philosophy that drives millions of Americans, each year, to give back to their communities and extend a helping hand to others through national service. Today, I encourage everyone to honor Dr. King's life and legacy with acts of service, not only today, but always."
