Rep. Veasey Signs Discharge Petition to Force House Vote to Protect DREAMers

May 18, 2018

Washington, D.C. – Today, Rep. Veasey (TX-33) released the following statement after signing a bipartisan discharge petition to force a vote on the House Floor to protect our nation's Dreamers.

"Both Republicans and Democrats can agree that inaction is not a solution," said Congressman Veasey. "Doing nothing, especially when there are hundreds of thousands of Americans who are living in uncertainty and in fear of deportation is not what our constituents sent us to do," added Rep. Veasey. "We are long overdue for an open debate and a vote on a permanent legislative solution for our Dreamers. I believe this discharge petition is a step in that direction."

This discharge petition would force a House vote on bills to protect Dreamers, including the bipartisan "Dream Act of 2017" and the bipartisan Hurd-Aguilar "USA Act of 2018." The proposal receiving the most votes on the Floor would be adopted, under a "queen-of-the-hill" procedure. In order for this procedure to occur, 218 Members of the House will need to sign the discharge petition. The number of signatures is updated in real time here.
