Rep. Veasey response to President Obama’s national address on Syria

September 11, 2013

WASHINGTON, DC -- Rep. Marc Veasey (TX-33) released the following statement after President Obama’s address to the nation on Syria:

“I greatly respect President Obama for taking his case directly to the American people and making clear why al-Assad’s chemical weapons attacks against his own country are a threat to our national security.

Last night, the President addressed specific questions from Congress and from constituents, making it clear why we should deter and degrade Assad’s capability to use chemical weapons again, not only to avoid the pattern of escalated use, but to send a message that use of chemical weapons will not be tolerated.

I am encouraged that the president’s strong show of resolve in response to the chemical weapons attacks has created the opportunity for a diplomatic resolution for Syria to give up and destroy its chemical weapons stockpile. We should allow the administration to continue working with the U.N. and our international allies to remove the international threat of chemical weapons in Syria without the use of force.

Military action should be our last resort, when diplomatic efforts and international pressure have failed. Recent diplomatic developments are early but show promise.”
