Rep. Veasey Rejects House Republicans’ H.R.1 Proposal

March 30, 2023

Legislation fails to adequately address our country’s energy needs, lower energy costs for Texans, or fix our nation’s grid problems

WASHINGTON – Today, Rep. Veasey released the following statement after he voted against H.R.1, the Lower Energy Costs Act:

"As a Texan on the Energy and Commerce Committee, I am focused on tackling some of the most pressing issues that face my constituents in Texas' 33rd District. I appreciate and support efforts to help alleviate the energy challenges that face Texas. However, the hyper-partisan, Republican-led legislation that we have voted on today is not the answer. Their legislation will do little to nothing to address the problems that Texas and our nation face. H.R. 1 will not address our country's energy security or lower energy costs for hardworking families, and it certainly won't help faltering grids in places like my home state of Texas.

You can watch Rep. Veasey's speech against the bill here.

"Last Congress, the Inflation Reduction Act took meaningful action to lower energy costs and clean our air, helping us to achieve energy independence and create good-paying jobs for people across Texas. H.R. 1 would repeal pieces of this historic legislation and roll back our progress on clean energy transition, making it significantly harder to secure a more sustainable future for generations to come. I remain committed to working across the aisle in a bipartisan, common-sense fashion when I can. That is why I am focused on coming together to pass meaningful permitting reform legislation that will actually address our problems by expanding existing best practices, reforming transmission siting authorities, improving environmental review efficiency, and increasing fairness and efficiency in judicial review."
