Rep. Veasey Joins House Democrats to Urge Speaker Boehner to Extend Unemployment Benefits for Millions

December 11, 2013

Members of Congress call to extend the Federal Emergency Unemployment Compensation program that will expire Dec. 28

Washington, D.C.—With only a few days left before Congress adjourns until January 2014, Congressman Marc Veasey TX-33, joined members of the House of Representatives calling on Speaker Boehner to take immediate action and extend unemployment benefits.

"Our responsibility in Congress is to provide a lifeline program to individuals who need a helping hand, not ignore them," said Congressman Veasey. "As Congress continues to work on a budget deal this week, we must not fail the American people by refusing to extend critical unemployment benefits for 1.3 million Americans, close to 68,900 of whom reside in Texas, in the midst of the holiday season."

The Federal Emergency Unemployment Compensation program protects over 1.3 million unemployed Americans. Congress has reauthorized the program 11 times since it was first enacted in 2008, and House Democrats have been pushing to do so again before the year-end deadline of December 28, 2013.
