“Hi, I am Congressman Marc Veasey and I represent Texas’ 33rd Congressional District, a place where Hispanic influence is reflected in almost all aspects of life.”

“From September 15th to October 15th, I hope you’ll join me in celebrating Hispanic Heritage Month by recognizing the contributions Latinos have made to the great state of Texas and to our nation.”

“There are Hispanic imprints on the Texas landscape from the time of exploration to the present. The Hispanic heritage of Texas is a part of the continuing heritage of every Texan.”

“Since the earliest days of the founding of America to the current day, Latinos have played a vital role in molding the American landscape.”

“Present-day Dallas remained under Spanish rule until 1821, when Mexico declared independence from Spain. The Republic of Texas broke off from Mexico in 1836, remaining an independent country for nearly 10 years afterward.”

“This history and heritage is part of our common past and its presence is felt in Texas’ architecture, in industries like ranching and farming, in our language, music, food and traditions. So familiar are many of these influences that they are rarely recognized as Hispanic in origin, but simply as uniquely Texan.”

The Latino community is woven into the fabric of our American tapestry. Today, there are over 50 million Latinos in the U.S., representing 16 percent of the total population. The Texas State Data Center projects that the DFW Hispanic population will grow to more than 9 million by the year 2040.

“From David Farragut, a Union Admiral who fought bravely in the Civil War, to Supreme Court Justice Sonia Sotomayor, Latinos have played a vital role in leading our nation. Mexican immigrants of more recent times – like the braceros and railroad workers -- played an important role in the early development of Texas.”

“This month, we should celebrate the history and ethnicity of all Texans and remember that together we are all Americans. It is a pleasure to celebrate Hispanic Heritage Month.”

“This month, I encourage you to learn more about the contributions of the Latino community. Thank you. Gracias.”
