Rep. Veasey Awards Local High School Student with 2018 Congressional Art Competition Top Prize

Dallas, Texas– On Monday, April 23rd, 2018, Congressman Veasey (TX-33) awarded Crystal Merlo, a freshman at Grand Prairie Fine Arts Academy with this year's top prize in the 2018 Congressional Art Competition for Texas' 33rd District.

"Each year, I am proud my office can help recognize student talent and encourage students to continue to pursue their passion," said Congressman Veasey. "All the entries we received this year serve as a testament to the vast artistic talent in our district," added Rep. Veasey. "Merlo's piece, RISE, is particularly inspiring and has a great uplifting message behind it."

Over 90 students from high schools across the DFW Metroplex submitted work for this year's competition. Honorable mentions in no particular order included: Rafael Perez-Moreno, from Everman High School for Reflection; Kristian Gaytan, from the Young Men's Leadership Academy for United Leaders, United People; Heriberto Navarro, from Fort Worth CAN Academy-Westcreek for Dreams; and Stephanie Salas, from Grand Prairie High School for Imaginarium.

Merlo's artwork was selected as the winning piece by a panel of judges composed of members of the local art community in the DFW area. She was announced as the winner Monday night at an awards reception hosted by Congressman Veasey. Click here to see photos of the event.

Later this year, Merlo will be invited to attend the winners' reception in Washington, D.C. Her artwork will be displayed at the U.S. Capitol for one year.
