Veasey supports underserved college students through federal Student Support Services Grants

WASHINGTON, D.C. – Congressman Marc Veasey, TX-33, released the following statement after the Department of Education awarded $2.1 million in Student Support Services Grants to Dallas-Fort Worth colleges and universities:

On Friday, July 17, 2015, the Department of Education awarded over $2.1 million in Student Support Services grants to the following institutions of higher education in the DFW Metroplex: Texas Christian University, University of North Texas, Dallas County Community College/ Eastfield, University of Texas at Arlington, Mountain View College, Richland College, Tarrant County College District, and Paul Quinn College.

The Student Support Services Program (SSS) grants will provide thousands of students in the Metroplex with the academic and mentoring services they need to succeed in college including academic tutoring, advice on postsecondary course selection, and assistance in completing financial aid applications.

"Federal TRIO programs are vital in our communities and I am excited to announce over $2 million in federal grant funding to DFW Metroplex universities. The Student Support Services (SSS) grants will work to increase the number of low-income and first-generation college students with the support services they need to be successful. In addition, these funds will provide the support and resources needed to help students transfer from two-year to four-year colleges or from undergraduate to graduate or professional studies. I am a proud supporter of TRIO programs in Congress, writing letters of support to guarantee these types of programs are fully funded. Moreover, I have worked to ensure that no student is barred from college completion due to a lack of institutional support or access to financial aid. My ‘FAFSA for All' bill, H.R. 1833, streamlines the financial aid process for students with non-citizen parents."
