PHOTOS: Rep. Veasey Works as Baking Assistant at Del Norte Bakery #2 in Dallas to Connect with Constituents

March 19, 2014

DALLAS, TX – This week, Congressman Marc Veasey, TX-33, kicked off the first in a series of “roll up your sleeves” local business visits across Texas’ 33rd congressional district, by touring and spending some time working as a baking assistant at Del Norte Bakery, a woman-owned and operated Hispanic bakery in Dallas.

The event was the first in a series of visits planned to Metroplex employers as part of Veasey’s new constituent outreach initiative, ‘Marc Means Business,’ to help him understand the challenges that constituents face in their jobs and daily lives. As part of this ongoing initiative, Veasey will visit a variety of well-known and lesser-known local businesses and organizations across the Metroplex.

“The number of women and minority business owners across the country has grown considerably in recent years and Texas being one of the states with fastest growth,” Veasey said. “As a woman-owned, Hispanic business, Del Norte Bakery, offered valuable insight on some of the challenges that small, minority-owned businesses face and what I can do to help as a member of Congress.”

Sisters, Carolina Lopez and Gloria De Lira opened the Del Norte Bakery #2 in 1991 selling only Mexican sweet bread or “pan dulce,” baked by their brother, Jesus Rivas, at Del Norte #1. Two years later, the demand for fresh baked goods at the Dallas bakery located at, 2519 Fort Worth Avenue, Dallas 75211, was so high that they decided to invest in the necessary equipment to provide the community with a delicious selection of traditional Hispanic specialties like “pan dulce,” tres leches cake and specialty decorated cakes provided with the highest standards of quality and workmanship. Today, the sisters also own Del Norte #3 in Pleasant Grove and Del Norte #4 in Oak Cliff, employing over 30 people – not including family.
