April 1, 2016

Over 300 DFW students participated in Veasey’s Teen Summit and Job Fair to prepare for college and workforce

Arlington, TX – On Friday, April 1, 2016, Congressman Marc Veasey, TX-33, hosted DFW Metroplex students at the Bob Duncan Center in Arlington for a day-long program aimed at preparing participants to attend college, enlist in the military, or join the workforce after graduating high school.

After Congressman Veasey welcomed participants, over 300 students settled in for a series of workshops to help plan for post-high school success. Workshop leaders and panelists provided insight on questions such as the application process for financial aid and scholarships, the details of joining the military through enlistment and the service academies, and the different career paths students may take after graduating high school. To conclude the program, Workforce Solutions of Tarrant Country representative provided helpful tips and interview strategies to prepare students for the on-site job and internship fair.

“When I get calls about education my staff and I usually are asked about financial aid, information on colleges and universities, scholarship opportunities, and even job opportunities. Those questions are what ultimately led to my creating my Teen Summit & Job Fair event,” Congressman Veasey said. “I want to ensure that students understand what life after high school looks like and how they can take advantage of all the available resources to plan for success no matter what path they take.”

Marya Qadrti, a MacArthur High School junior, shared that the Teen Summit provided useful resources and access to professionals, both which will help him envision his future. “I think the fact that [the speakers] motivated you [was the most helpful]. I want to go into business marketing and administration and I met a live person who created his own business. I’ve only heard about [people in that field], read about it, and [one of the speakers] actually came up to me and talked to me,” Qadrti said.
