House Republicans Block Congressman Veasey’s Tax Amendment
Washington, D.C. – On Tuesday, November 14, 2017, House Republicans on the Rules Committee rejected an amendment offered by Congressman Marc Veasey, TX-33, to add provisions to the House Republican tax bill that would support the working class. Rep. Veasey's amendment would have strengthened families, assisted immigrants who want to become patriotic Americans, and incentivized greater access to fresh, healthy food.
"Once again House Republican Leadership stripped away any form of bipartisanship during the tax reform process. My amendment would have helped tip the scales from the current bill catering to just the super wealthy to helping working families and aspiring Americans," said Congressman Veasey. "I am disappointed but not surprised that the Rules Committee rejected my amendment and other commonsense amendments that would have restored critical provisions for hardworking families."
The amendments offered by Congressman Veasey mimics legislation he introduced during the 115th Congress. The Grandparents Tax Credit Act of 2017provides a $500 refundable tax credit to lessen the out-of-pocket costs that grandparents take when they serve as primary caregivers for their grandchildren. The Promise of Citizenship Act would reduce the out of pocket costs of successfully applying for U.S. citizenship by providing a $500 refundable tax credit for newly naturalized citizens. The Farmers Markets for Food Deserts Actensures that families living in food deserts have reliable access to fresh and nutritious foods year-round.
