Congressman Veasey Votes Against Republicans’ Latest Attack on Women’s Access to Healthcare

September 18, 2015

Washington, D.C.—Congressman Marc Veasey, TX-33, issued the following statement after voting against H.R. 3134, the Defund Planned Parenthood Act and H.R. 3504, the Adding Criminal Penalties for Violating the Born Alive Act, a series of House Republican bills that attack critical health care services for women:

"Today, I was proud to vote against H.R. 3134, the Defund Planned Parenthood Act, which seeks to ban funding for Planned Parenthood and its affiliates. In addition, I also voted against H.R. 3504, the Adding Criminal Penalties for Violating the Born Alive Act, which would deprive women of access to comprehensive health care services by imposing new legal requirements on abortion services.

These bills are just the latest assault in the ongoing Republican war on women's health. Defunding Planned Parenthood would result in millions of low-income women across this country losing access to critical care and would place additional stress on remaining community health centers that are already overwhelmed. I'm proud to stand with our nation's mothers, sisters, daughters, and the medical community in opposing these bills that not only serve to place politicians between women and their doctors but also disrespect women's healthcare choices. These choices should rest with a woman, her doctor, and the family and friends that she chooses to consult with.

It is far past time to stop politicizing women's health and get to the task of governing. With only five legislative days left in this fiscal year, this unnecessary vote has all but assured that the government will shut down. I urge my Republican colleagues to end their messaging campaign and get to the business of governing."
