Congressman Veasey Votes Against 60th Vote to Undermine the Affordable Care Act

June 23, 2015

Washington, D.C. — Congressman Marc Veasey, TX-33, released the following statement after voting against H.R. 1190 the Protecting Seniors' Access to Medicare Act of 2015, a political ploy by House Republicans to repeal or undermine the Affordable Care Act:

"Today, I voted against H.R. 1190, a bill to eliminate the Independent Payment Advisory Board (IPAB) established by the Affordable Care Act that addresses sharp increases in Medicare spending. While I support efforts to improve the law and lower health care costs for all Americans, this bill unfortunately does neither. It instead represents another irresponsible attempt by Congressional Republicans to repeal or undermine the Affordable Care Act which is the law of the land and is helping millions obtain healthcare. According to the Congressional Budget Office (CBO), repealing IPAB would increase Medicare costs and add over $7 billion to the deficit over ten years. Furthermore, to offset this cost, the bill would rescind funding for the Prevention and Public Health Fund, virtually crippling its ability to invest in programs that prevent the leading causes of death in our country. It's long overdue for Congressional Republicans to end their half a decade partisan obsession with repealing or undermining the Affordable Care Act and start working with Democrats on a bipartisan basis to create jobs and strengthen our economy. I stand with President Obama who has rightly threatened to veto this irresponsible bill."
