Congressman Veasey to Serve as Honorary Co-Host the 2015 Texas Congressional Community Policing Summit
Arlington, TX – On Thursday, January 15, 2015, Congressman Marc Veasey (TX-33), Congresswoman Eddie Bernice Johnson (TX-30), and the Texas State Conference of the NAACP, in partnership with Congresswoman Sheila Jackson Lee (TX-18) and Congressman Al Green (TX-9), will co-host the 2015 Texas Congressional Community Policing Summit.
The summit, which brings together people from all fields including elected officials, law enforcement, civic leaders, the faith community, academia, and law, is being held in an effort to discuss the causes of tragedies such as Ferguson, Missouri and New York City, and to keep them from occurring again. The goal is to reform current law enforcement policies in order to ensure a safe and secure environment and ultimately rebuild trust between law enforcement officials and the community.
The daylong event will consist of three separate panels: Panel 1, titled "Public Safety: Lessons Learned from Ferguson," Panel 2, titled "Building Trust: Identifying Impediments to Peaceful Police-Citizen Encounters," and Panel 3, titled "Models for Effective Community Policing: Identifying Training Needs and Methods for Improving Community-Police Interaction." The panels are discussions that will help to educate the public about past events and to generate resolutions for the future.
