Congressman Veasey Statement on Passage of Clean DHS Funding Bill

March 3, 2015

Funding for the Department of Homeland Security Passed by 257-167 vote

Washington, D.C. —Congressman Marc Veasey, TX-33, released the following statement as the House of Representatives voted to fund the Department of Homeland Security without poison pill riders that would roll back the President's executive actions on immigration.

"Today, House Republican leadership finally listened to the will of the American people and joined House Democrats in fully funding the Department of Homeland Security through the end of Fiscal Year 2015. This is a great victory for the American people who are tired of House leadership trying and failing to appease the most extreme elements of their party with shutdown politics.

The safety of our nation should never be a pawn in the Republicans' political games. That is why House Democrats stood strong to ensure that the workers who protect our ports, borders, and aviation system and keep American families safe would receive their paychecks on time and in full. This vote today should serve as a lesson that it is the height of irresponsibility to put partisan political games above our country's national security.

In the same spirit of bipartisan cooperation, our next step should be to improve our broken immigration system through comprehensive immigration reform. The President has made it clear that his executive action is only a temporary fix and the only permanent solution lies with Congress. I stand ready to work with my colleagues across the aisle to negotiate a feasible permanent solution."
