Washington D.C. - On Tuesday, March 18, art pieces decorated the halls of Mountain View College as Congressman Veasey hosted the second Congressional Art Competition Reception in the 33rd Congressional District. The 2014 Congressional Art Competition drew over 61 entries from high school students across the Metroplex.
This year, Maria Nino-Garcia a senior at Everman High School, took home the top prize with her charcoal self-portrait entitled Enclosed by Nyx. “For me, art became a voice to express my point of view to the world. For this reason and for the encouragement my teacher gave me, I decided to enter this contest.”
When describing her winning piece Maria says, “Night for me means darkness and I think everyone is surrounded by her at some point and this piece represents that. It is my favorite artwork, because it also represents my mysterious personality.”
