Congressman Marc Veasey (TX-33) Votes to Reassert Congressional Authority on War Powers
Congressman Marc Veasey (TX-33) released the following statement after voting in favor of two bipartisan measures; one that would repeal the 2002 Authorization for Use of Military Force against Iraq, and one that would prohibit the use of federal funds for military action against Iran unless Congress has declared war:
"Earlier this month, our President conducted a military airstrike targeting high-level Iranian officials without properly consulting Congress. His actions endangered brave servicemembers, diplomats and others both in our country and abroad by recklessly escalating tensions with an adversarial country. And now, we are seeing the serious impact as we learn that dozens of the brave men and women in uniform have been diagnosed with head trauma after Iran's retaliatory strike. It is our duty as a legislative body to keep those that we represent safe from threats such as these--that is why I voted on a resolution to limit the President's military actions regarding Iran a few weeks ago, and why I voted today to repeal the 2002 Iraq Authorization for Use of Military Force (AUMF) and on legislation to prohibit funding for military action against Iran not authorized by Congress. American lives and values are on the line and we must do everything we can do protect them."
