Congressman Marc Veasey (TX-33) Statement on Violent Insurrection at U.S. Capitol
Congressman Marc Veasey (TX-33) issued the following statement addressing the violent insurrection that occurred at U.S. Capitol during the certification of the results of the 2020 Presidential election:
"This week, we experienced an unprecedented attack on our democracy. As you may know, as the Vice President of the United States, the Senate, and my colleagues and I in the House of Representatives convened to do our constitutional duty—certifying the states' results of the electoral college for the next President of the United States—a violent mob of insurrectionists invaded our United States Capitol building resulting in multiple deaths and putting countless other lives at risk.
Because I have the privilege of representing the people of the 33rd district of Texas, I have the great opportunity to work in the United States Capitol. The violent incident that occurred earlier this week has not happened in hundreds of years. Not since the War of 1812 has our Capitol been invaded in this way. Yet, just days ago this sacred building was taken over by a mob that desecrated its halls and forced the people's elected representatives to evacuate to safety. This once unimaginable assault on our United States Capitol was incited by the President of the United States.
There are many matters relating to this week's incident that must be examined and addressed in the incoming days, months and years to ensure an event like this never occurs again—but one matter must be urgently dealt with: it is clear that President Trump represents a grave threat to our nation and must be removed as soon as possible. This week's insurrection was clearly encouraged by the President of the United States, who willfully incited violence against the Government of the United States. It is for these reasons that I support his immediate removal from office, whether through the process set forth in the 25th Amendment or through the constitutional process of impeachment.
Make no mistake—this week's violent insurrection did not and will not stop my colleagues and I from continuing our fight for the American people. Despite this attack, Congress still gathered to complete the Electoral College certification process and cemented President-elect Biden and Vice President-elect Harris's historic 2020 election victory. My colleagues and I remain committed to working together with the incoming Biden-Harris Administration to repair the damage to our nation that this attack has caused and continue our fight to end this pandemic and deliver results for hard-working Americans."
