Congressman Marc Veasey Stands Up For College Students
WASHINGTON, D.C. – Rep. Veasey Fights to Keep Loan Interest Rates Down and Ensure College Accessibility.
Today, Congressman Marc Veasey voted against the Republican-led H.R. 1911, “Making College More Expensive Act,” which would charge millions of students and families nearly $4 billion over the next decade in additional interest charges relative to current law. H.R. 1911 is the Republican response to addressing the looming July 1st deadline, when federal subsidized Stafford student loans are set to double from 3.4 to 6.8 percent. Both the National Education Association and the American Federation of Teachers oppose this legislation.
“College is becoming less and less affordable each day, and students are graduating with more and more debt. I understand this all too well, having only recently paid off my student loans after many years. In this already strained economy, Republicans are putting forth proposals that hurt students and families even more. If Congress adopts this Republican-led proposal, college students will be worse off than if the student loan rate doubled. That is senseless. We should be helping students pursue a higher education, not squeezing them for every penny they have,” said Congressman Marc Veasey.
H.R. 1911, the Smarter Solutions for Students Act or “Making College More Expensive Act,” saddles students with higher interest rates and deepens the college debt crisis. To learn more about this legislation, click here.
