Congressman Marc Veasey, Senator Ron Wyden Lead Bicameral Resolution to Recognize September National Voting Rights Month
Over 75 Members of Congress are co-sponsoring this bicameral resolution
WASHINGTON – Today, Congressman Marc Veasey (D-TX), co-founder and co-chair of the Congressional Voting Rights Caucus, introduced a bicameral resolution with Senator Ron Wyden (D-OR) to recognize September as "National Voting Rights Month." The resolution will encourage voter registration in the month of September and push Congress to restore the Voting Rights Act of 1965 to preserve the right to vote amid Republican-led voter suppression attempts.
"Republicans in places like my home state of Texas are using the ‘Big Lie' conspiracy theory to make it harder for seniors, people of color, and young people to vote in the upcoming election," said Congressman Veasey, "As co-founder of the Congressional Voting Rights Caucus, I will continue to work with my colleagues to protect the right to vote for all Americans and safeguard our electoral system. That is precisely why Senator Wyden and I are once again introducing this bicameral resolution because we must continue to raise awareness about the importance of passing voting rights legislation that ensures everyone can have access to the ballot box in the 2022 elections and beyond."
"The right to vote in free and fair elections is under increasing threat from Republican politicians looking to win power at all costs – even if it means disenfranchising qualified voters," said Senator Wyden. "Congressman Veasey and I are standing up for the principle that ensuring all Americans can exercise their right to vote is the bedrock of democratic government."
This resolution has been endorsed by five voting rights and civil rights organizations, civil justice groups, and voting rights activists, including GALEO, League of Women Voters, Stand Up America, Color of Change, and Voters of Tomorrow.
"As Gen Z activists, we know just how essential voting is — but as voting rights are under attack across the country, young people are often among those most impacted. The fight to protect the sacred right to vote is critical for us, because our entire mission to build a more equitable, healthy, and safe future rests on it. Voters of Tomorrow is proud to stand in support of designating this September as 'National Voting Rights Month.' We look forward to seeing this resolution passed and to celebrating with Senator Wyden, Congressman Veasey, and our other allies in the pro-democracy coalition," said Santiago Mayer, Executive Director of Voters of Tomorrow
