Veasey Statement on Supreme Court Decision in Evenwel v. Abbott

April 5, 2016

Dallas / Fort Worth, TX - Congressman Marc Veasey, TX-33, released the following statement after the Supreme Court affirmed in an 8-0 decision the constitutionality of counting total population for determining voting districts:

“Today, the Supreme Court rejected the political argument that children and thousands of other hard-working, tax-paying adults don’t count and don’t deserve representation. Everyone must be counted in our democracy and as elected officials we have a responsibility to represent everyone in our districts. Taxes are paid and hospitals, roads, parks and social services are used by everyone who lives in our communities, not just by those eligible to vote. The Supreme Court sent a unified message that ‘one-person, one-vote’ should be continued to be based on total population, not the population of eligible voters. As Texan Republican leaders continue their attacks on voting rights and minority representation, we must keep our democracy strong by ensuring that overt partisanship does not steal away the dreams and contributions of the next generation of Americans.”
