Veasey and House Democrats Stand With Undocumented Valedictorians

June 13, 2016

House Democrats introduce resolution recognizing immigrant contributions in the era of hateful rhetoric and action toward Latinos, Muslims, and minorities

Washington, D.C. – Today, Congressman Marc Veasey, TX-33, and over 15 House Democrats introduced House Resolution 777, a resolution that honors the bravery of two undocumented Texas valedictorians who recently experienced national scrutiny for publicizing their academic accomplishments. The nationwide conversation condemning a pair of hardworking graduating seniors is a direct result of the anti-immigrant, anti-Muslim, anti-LGBTQ and anti-Latino policy agenda set by Republicans.

“America is a nation of immigrants and no misleading or discriminatory rhetoric spread by Republican leadership should threaten this proud legacy. Larissa Martinez and Mayte Lara Ibarra’s courage is commendable especially in an era of anti-immigrant sentiments that have been perpetuated by the party represented by the GOP Presidential nominee,” Congressman Veasey said. "House Democrats continue to stand and protect vulnerable communities, like our children who have been unfairly targeted due to divisive and politically motivated actions.”

“As one of the 11 million undocumented immigrants living in the shadows of the United States, I can’t stress enough the obstacles our country’s broken immigration system creates for young people like me and other aspiring Americans,” Larissa Martinez said. “Public officials must use their platforms to unite the nation, not divide it.”

The introduction of today’s resolution is part of Congressman Veasey’s larger policy agenda to address the real and immediate needs of the immigrant community. Since 2013, House Republicans continue to refuse to bring comprehensive immigration reform to the floor for a vote.
