Rep. Veasey Introduce Resolution to Recognize 29th Anniversary of the FCC’s First Spectrum Auction

July 27, 2023

WASHINGTON - Today, Representative Marc Veasey introduced a resolution highlighting the 29th anniversary of the Federal Communications Commission's (FCC) first spectrum auction. For nearly three decades, the FCC has conducted spectrum auctions for commercial wireless communications to serve the public interest, promote deployment of new connectivity technology, and achieve the most efficient use of this finite resource. Spectrum is necessary to meet the demands of accelerating wireless data, fuel the accessibility of 5G innovation, and secure U.S. wireless leadership.

"The FCC's competitive bidding process for spectrum licenses has fueled the expansion of next-generation technologies that are widely available for all Americans. From deployment of mobile and fixed wireless broadband to funding the FirstNet public safety communications network, spectrum auctions have been successful and beneficial for both commercial and Federal entities, bringing in over $230 billion in revenue to the U.S. Department of Treasury," said Rep. Veasey. "U.S. global competitiveness and leadership in this domain requires Congress to reauthorize the FCC's spectrum auction authority and think strategically about the future of our spectrum policy."

As a member of the House Committee on Energy and Commerce, Rep. Veasey has helped pass solutions to restore the FCC's spectrum auction authority and direct auction proceeds to fund critical programs.
