RELEASE: REP. VEASEY VOTES IN SUPPORT OF VAWA

February 28, 2013

WASHINGTON, D.C. – Today, Thursday, February 28, Congressman Marc Veasey voted in favor of the Violence Against Women Act (VAWA). House Republicans sought to pass a version of the legislation that would have weakened current law and was opposed by over 1,300 organizations.

With Congressman Marc Veasey’s support, Congress instead approved the Senate bipartisan version that includes protections for the LGBT community, and Native American and immigrant women.

Congressman Veasey released the following statement following today’s passage:

“Today, we accomplished something significant in Congress. We passed a bill that provides protection against domestic violence and sexual assault, and we made sure the protections include immigrant and Native American women, as well the LGBT community. There are over 340,000 women in the 33rd Congressional District that will have protection under the Violence Against Women Act Reauthorization.”
