CONGRESSSMAN MARC VEASEY EXPRESSES SUPPORT FOR LGBT COMMUNITY AS THE SUPREME COURT HEARS ORAL ARGUMENTS ON PROPOSITION 8 & THE DEFENSE OF MARRIAGE ACT

March 26, 2013

WASHINGTON, D.C. – Today, Congressman Marc Veasey issued a statement in support of millions of same-sex couples across the country as the Supreme Court enters a two-day session of oral arguments on two historic cases. In Hollingsworth v. Perry and United States v. Windsor, respectively, the Supreme Court will address the constitutionality of Proposition 8, an amendment to California’s constitution banning same-sex marriage, as well as the Defense of Marriage Act, which defines marriage as a union between a man and a woman for federal recognition purposes. If both laws are ruled unconstitutional, it will represent a watershed moment for the LGBT community, which has been fighting for decades to obtain basic human and civil rights.

Congressman Veasey’s statement:

“As the Supreme Court considers the constitutionality of Proposition 8 and the Defense of Marriage Act, I would like to reaffirm my commitment to the LGBT community. It is my hope that the justices of the nation’s highest court rule that committed same-sex couples have civil and constitutional rights. The struggle for equality has taken us from Stonewall to the Supreme Court. As decades of progress have changed attitudes and opened hearts, I will continue to fight for members of the LGBT community until they have full equality under the law.”

Congressman Marc Veasey represents the 33rd Congressional District which includes Dallas-Fort Worth. He is a Member of LGBT Caucus in the House of Representatives, and is a strong supporter of repealing the Defense of Marriage Act.
