Congressman Marc Veasey Votes to Rebuild Nation’s Highways

July 15, 2014

Rep. Veasey votes in favor of reauthorizing H.R. 5021, the Highway and Transit Trust Fund

Washington, D.C. – Congressman Marc Veasey, TX-33, released the following statement regarding H.R. 5021, a bill that reauthorizes the Highway and Transit Trust Fund through May 31, 2015:

"I am proud that the House has put partisanship aside to consider stop-gap transportation funding that will prevent our Highway and Transit Trust Fund from running out of important funds next month and extend federal highway and public transportation programs through May of next year.

While I would much prefer that Congress consider a four or six year Highway and Transit reauthorization bill to provide long term reliability and predictability for our city, regional, and state transportation planners, this eleventh hour legislative vehicle will ensure that current funding levels for our nation's highway, bridge, and transit maintenance will continue past next month and well into next year.

I understand that many conservative groups like Club for Growth not only oppose this legislation but question the validity of federal involvement in transportation policy, but I am proud to stand with groups like the Transportation and Trades Department of AFL-CIO, American Farm Bureau, U.S. Chamber of Commerce, National Association of Manufacturers, National Governor's Association, and the U.S. Conference of Mayors to support this important legislation that will keep our transportation economy rolling."
